FD30 and FD60: understanding the specification before ordering

Fire Doors Kent 5 min read

FD30 and FD60 describe different fire-resistance periods. The correct requirement for an opening must come from the relevant building assessment and specification, not a website recommendation or visual preference.

Product descriptions often lead with a rating, but a number alone is not a complete fire door specification. Before asking an installer to price a particular product, understand where the requirement came from and which opening it concerns. A stronger-sounding label should not replace a considered brief.

This guide explains the terminology at an introductory level and the questions to take into a quotation discussion. It does not select a rating for your property, confirm a particular product range or provide installation instructions. If your requirements are uncertain, explain that uncertainty so the appropriate information or assessment can be identified before products are agreed.

What the numbers tell you

FD30 and FD60 refer to 30-minute and 60-minute fire-resistance categories respectively. These descriptions concern fire performance under the relevant test conditions; they are not a promise of an identical outcome in every real fire. Government fire-risk-assessment guidance describes the principal categories and their related terminology.

Ask for the complete specification rather than stopping at the number. A product description should be understood with the applicable evidence and intended installation. Keep any written requirement available for the quotation discussion. If two documents use different terminology, seek clarification from the appropriate adviser instead of treating a superficial similarity as confirmation that the products are interchangeable.

Smoke performance is a separate part of the question

You may see an S suffix in descriptions such as FD30S. Government guidance explains its relationship to smoke seals and smoke control. Do not assume that a fire-resistance number alone communicates every smoke-related requirement for the opening.

Provide the wording of the actual brief rather than shortening it when asking for quotations. If an adviser has specified a particular performance or arrangement, preserve that detail. The appropriate product needs consideration against the complete requirement. This guide does not assign a universal smoke or rating requirement to every flat, workplace or internal doorway simply because it belongs to a broad property category.

Establish where the requirement came from

Identify whether the specification is part of a project design, a report or another established instruction. Connect it to the opening and explain who can clarify questions. A preferred product found online should not silently become the technical brief for a building.

Where the requirement remains uncertain, describe the property and reason for the project rather than guessing. An enquiry can begin with open questions. The next step may involve obtaining the relevant specification or advice before a suitable installation proposal is confirmed. Keeping that uncertainty visible prevents a quotation being mistaken for the original assessment of what the building actually requires.

Consider the assembly, not the label alone

The installed arrangement includes more than the visible leaf. Ask how the proposed door, frame and associated fittings are addressed in the quotation and what information supports the intended combination. A rating on one item should not be treated as approval of every surrounding component.

If you hope to retain existing items, raise that preference early. The relevant suitability question must still be considered. Likewise, explain preferred glazing or finish alongside the specification rather than treating appearance as an independent choice with no effect on the product proposal. Do not alter or substitute components yourself on the assumption that the rating remains unaffected.

Compare options without upgrading by guesswork

Do not choose a different rating simply because it sounds more protective or appears in a cheaper listing. Ask how any alternative relates to the established requirement and what changes in the proposed products or installation tasks. A written explanation makes the decision clearer for the approving person.

For several doors, use a schedule showing where requirements differ. One building can contain openings with different purposes, so avoid assigning the same product to every location by default. Keep accepted alternatives connected to their door references and retain the current specification. This is a procurement discipline, not an instruction to decide the technical design yourself.

Prepare a specified installation enquiry

Send the postcode, building type, door locations and available requirement documents. Mention the source of the specification, preferred appearance and any items you hope to retain. Identify who approves choices and who can answer technical questions about the brief.

Fire Doors Kent combines supply and installation. Request a free quotation through Contact and explain what is established and what remains open. Do not assume that every rating, material or configuration mentioned in a guide is automatically available from the business. Suitable options, product availability and the work at the actual opening need discussion before an installation scope is agreed.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Your questions, answered

What do FD30 and FD60 mean?

They refer to 30-minute and 60-minute fire-resistance categories. The complete specification and relevant evidence still need consideration for the intended opening.

Does the number select the right door for my property?

No. The requirement should follow the relevant assessment and specification, not a general website description or preference.

Does FD30 automatically communicate smoke requirements?

Do not assume it does. Preserve the full wording of the specification and seek clarification about smoke-related requirements where needed.

Can I choose a higher number without advice?

Discuss alternatives against the established brief. A different category should not be substituted solely because it sounds preferable.

Can every door in a building use one specification?

Do not assume identical requirements. Keep the locations and relevant specifications clear in a door schedule.

Does this guide confirm product availability?

No. Discuss suitable options and the actual project with our team before assuming a rating or configuration is offered.
